What's the least expensive new car you'd buy?

Simple question: suppose you have money, but not a whole bunch (you can decide on what it means). You’re looking for a new car. Which car would you buy that would be the least expensive to purchase, but would leave you pretty happy with what you’ve ended up with?

Personally, I’d get a Sonic RS with the manual in green. Apparently I could snag one for $22,333 CAD right now, which isn’t terrible, I suppose, and it’s also a neat little car.

So, what would you guys get?

I bought it.. 2014 Ford Fiesta.

I would have loved a Fiesta ST but MTX and Boston traffic just wasn’t what I wanted.

I'll answer with what I purchased in March. 2015 Honda Civic sedan. I actually wanted a Fit, but I didn't fit in it. So, the Civic was the next logical choice. I don't seem to fit in a lot of the smallest offerings from most manufacturers.

Well I guess if I really needed a *new* car, I’d buy whatever I could afford.

That said, new car I would actually buy right now if I had to:

Jeep Renegade - $20,990 (base model, 1.4 turbo/6 speed manual/4x4, Commando Green)

The other two I would consider but eliminated are:

Honda HR-V - $19,990 (base, 2wd with manual transmission)

Subaru CrossTrek XV - $22,445 (absolute most base model, 5 speed manual, no options, in Tan)

The HR-V is out because I can’t get AWD *AND* a manual transmission. The CrossTrek is out because I don’t see it doing anything better than the Jeep, and it’s $1500 more, so if we’re going with cheap, Jeep gets the nod.

Oh okay, I know what you mean. Yeah, Subaru really likes to do that. I think in cases they can be useful. Like on a car without navigation... Although, if the car has a nav option it becomes pretty redundant because you could just display that information on the nav screen.

I asked myself this question 3 years ago and wound up buying a Base Kia Soul 6MT.

I’ve kind of liked it so far... in the same way that James May always talked about liking the Dacia Sandero and the Fiat Panda. It’s very utilitarian, not many frills, and you really have to wring out that engine to get it to move with any kind of haste. Slow car fast and whatnot.
